Red Admiral Butterfly

It’s summer here, although you wouldn’t think so with the cool weather we have had and the heavy downpours. Great weather for the ducks! Despite this, once the sun shines the garden begins to buzz once again. One of the frequent visitors here is the beautiful Red Admiral butterfly, (Latin name: Vanessa atalanta) who just loves our buddleia bush 0r more commonly known as the butterfly bush. It certainly lives up to its name.

Red Admiral Butterfly

The Red Admiral can be found in most any garden in the U.K.  It seems to thrive well in this climate and is often still seen flying around into the early autumn months. It’s brownish black wings are very striking with their mottled orange markings and whitish spots near the wing tips. As you see here it feasts well on the butterfly bush and also loves orchards where there is rotting fruit.
